Americans without a doubt love their pets. From cats and dogs to iguanas and tarantulas, pets provide millions of Americans companionship and unconditional love. Americans have always adored pets and in the last few decades, that devotion has reached even greater heights. Since the 1970s, American pet ownership has nearly tripled. From approximately 67 million households with pets in the 1970s, more than 164 million households have pets today. Americans own 83 million dogs and 96 million cats alone! The United States spends more than $50 billion on their pets, providing them with food, toys, shelter, leashes, grooming supplies, and veterinary care.
